I wish I had chosen the fish

We spent a few days in Elkhart and unfortunately the hotel we stayed in was some distance from any restaurants so we had to get in the car yet again and go looking for somewhere to eat.

We were pointed in the direction of the main area of Elkhart and the Receptionist said there were a few to choose from around there. We chose the Red Lobster as we had enjoyed a meal there a number of years ago in New England so we thought it would be nice to try again even thought this time we were not near the sea or in a Lobster catching area as we had been previously.

We were welcomed as you always are in the USA and taken to a table. They were the sort of tables sideways with a privacy screen between and benches to sit at. I find these okay but do prefer a less regimented set up but it is a chain restaurant and so I was not expecting fine dining.

We were asked if we wanted to order drinks and as one of us had to drive we both opted for soft drinks which came quite quickly.

My husband cannot eat a lot of seafood but is fine with fish so he chose one of his favourite fish, Tilapia which is actually a fresh water fish. The dish he chose was Tilapia with Roasted Vegetables and this did look really good when it came with a white wine sauce, asparagus, artichokes and wild rice pilaf. The Tilapia was roasted in a parchement bag so was really soft and moist. He said it was delicious and indeed I did try a bit and it was melt in the mouth. The price was around $15 I think which was not bad for that sort of food.

My choice was probably an error as I found it all a bit samey. I chose the Admiral's Feast which is a variety of fish and sea food all in breadcrumbs. They included Shrimp, bay scallops, clam strips and flounder but as they were all fried and I had o salad I found I just got bored as everything tasted similar. I was getting food envy for my husband's choice and I wished I selected something like that. I would have preferred less of the fried seafood and a little fresh salad on the side for a change of taste and texture. This meal cost about $19 so I was very disappointed but it was my mistake really.

The young lady who served us was not as efficient as waitresses in the USA usually are and initially brought the wrong meal to us. She also didn't come back to check all was okay so we were not impressed with the service.

It was a bit of a disappointing meal all up but that was partly due to my silly order. I do think the seafood and fish were all a bit overcooked and dry on my plate but as I had nothing to compare it to I didn't complain, I just made a mental not not to order that again. Close
