The building is very old, almost tacky from the outside but inside they have done a lot of renovations and it's a case of old meets new - high ceilings with original moulding, lots of sleek wood accessories and modern, electric blue light fixtures. Triangular table mats, chrome and wood tables and waiters wearing kilts complete the picture to give, as their ad says "a funky fusion of design innovation and exotic cuisine".
We ordered from their regular menu which had a good selection of mild, medium and spicy dishes as well as options for vegetarians and those who didn't like Indian food. Appetizers included vegetable samosas, chili cheese toast and potato skins. I enjoyed my prawn cocktail, crisp lettuce topped with lots of chilled fresh prawns in a Thousand Islands type dressing. Jim had mixed pakora, chopped vegetables and dough lightly fried and served with a tangy dressing. As my main course I chose Chicken Korma, chunks of chicken in a creamy coconut and curry sauce. There was more sauce than chicken but that was ok - I liked it so much that I spooned it over my rice and used it as a dip with bread. Jim's spicy Lamb Pardesi in a tomato based sauce was more substantial and very flavourful. Both meals came with confetti coloured rice, warm naan bread and crispy chappatis. Not being Indian food lovers, Dad ordered steak pie and another fellow had sirloin steak with French fries, sautéed mushrooms, onion rings and garlic bread.
The waiters were friendly and lots of fun, the food was good and the bride and groom were beaming - all in all, a very enjoyable night. Mr. Singh's is open for weekday lunch, weekend brunch, pre theatre specials and dinner every night. Reservations are recommended.
