If you love fish and seafood and want to try everything then this is the place to visit.

Restaurant Reykjavik occupies a pretty traditional Icelandic house, painted yellow and very distinctive. In summer there is seating outside and it's a lovely spot as very little traffic goes by this part of the old town area of the Icelandic capital. Do make a reservation for Saturday nights in particular; we walked down at lunchtime on Saturday and managed to get a table for that evening but it most tables were taken.

An a la carte menu is also available and there are alternatives to fish but we were keen to try all kinds of locally caught seafood and were happy with the buffet. To start there's a good fish soup and various kinds of smoked and cured salmon. This restaurant is known for serving whale meat and smoked puffin, both undeniably contentious but there if you want to try them - we did. The puffin was served up on small ceramic spoons - it was packed with flavour but I don't think I've have guessed it was puffin if I'd had a lifetime of guesses. The whale was served raw, thinly sliced like sashimi; it had a strong flavour too and made me think of fish crossed with game meats. If you want to try these items you need to go early because they only put out a limited amount and when it's gone, that's it. More conventionally there were prawns in a variety of presentations, juicy green-lipped mussels, poached salmon and crab meat. There were also several different kinds of pickled herring which I particularly enjoyed.

For main courses you can choose battered cod, rich fish stews, salmon en croute and several other options. To accompany these there were potatoes - simply boiled in their skins and very good, or a wonderful beetroot gratin, and salad, though the latter was not being replenished as often as it should have been. There were also sauteed potatoes, rice and mixed vegetables. I must admit I didn't find the mains as exciting as the dishes presented as starters but there was a good choice all the same.

Those with a sweet tooth will be happy here. There were traditional Scandinavian cakes as well as gooey chocolate cakes covered in glossy frosting, mini creme brulees and the most luxuriously rich white chocolate mousse served in little shot glasses.

Service was efficient and friendly and as with everybody involved in the tourist/hospitality industry in Iceland, all staff spoke impeccable English. The contemporary interior is smart without being stuffy and overly formal and there was a buzzy atmosphere without the place being too loud.
