There weren't that many places to eat, so it might be a good idea to eat first or pack a lunch.
The zoo is always an enjoyable place to visit though. You don't have to wait in long lines for thrill rides. It's a nice change of pace.

The office staff was extremely nice. They checked our bags, which were too big for the lockers, at the security office without even charging us. All of the guards were very friendly and helpful.

Best Value admission with guided bus tour and Skyfari aerial tram ride: Adult $32.00, Child $19.75
Two-Park Ticket (Best Value Zoo admission and Wild Animal Park general admission to use within five days of purchase): Adult $52.65, Child $35.35 (Two-Park tickets not available online).
San Diego 3-for-1 Pass: Visit San Diego's premier attractions (San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park, Sea World) with five days' unlimited admission for one price. Online Link for Pre-Purchase. When visiting to the San Diego Zoo, a good plan is to take the informative guided tour aboard a double-decker bus, and get a bird's-eye view of the zoo, Balboa Park, and more while riding over the treetops on the Skyfari aerial tram. You can save money too, by purchasing the BEST VALUE admission package! It includes the Skyfari ride and the guided bus tour, as well as on-and-off privileges aboard the Express Bus, and costs less than purchasing each activity separately.

Plenty to do nearby with Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm amusement park. December is a great time of year to go. We walked right on the rides. It's not nearly as big as Disney World in Orlando, but I liked the simplicity of it, and the nostalgia factor.
