I pushed aside my worries of disrespecting the holy Ganges River when I saw loads of Indians also preparing to embark on a 15 km river rafting journey, just like me. The fact that Rishikesh-- known for attracting yogis and ashram dwellers even HAD such adrenlaine adventures surpised me. There were six of us in a group of random travelers-- a Russian guy, two Kazakstan girls, a young Indian couple, myself, and two guides. After we received a ten minute tutorial on paddling commands, we were ready to set sail, er, raft. There were six rapids that we hit during our three hour ride, with names such as Roller Coaster, Double/Triple, and Hello, Goodbye. Our guide did an excellent job steering us to nail the rapids just right. We surfed the waves, played with them and welcomed them when they soared towards us. In between all this excitement, our guide led us through several call and response chants. These were blessings to the Ganges which we shouted a the top of our lungs. In the calmer parts of the water, we jumped in for a very cool swim. There was also a rock jumping area where only the brave (me included!) could climb up 15 meters to leap into the river. The last leg of our rafting was scenic in that jawdroppingly quiet "I'm taking this all in" sort of way.
With all the rafting companies to choose from, a shout out goes to Himalayan Gipsy Adventures. They are professional, fun, enthusiastic and had excellent rafts, life jackets and paddles. Rs300.
