I had stayed at the Rooms Inn a couple of years ago and it wasn’t a particularly pleasant experience as I found the room and the hotel in general to be in need of a complete refurbishment. It also wasn’t very clean and overall it wasn’t a very nice place to stay so when I was going to a concert at the Metro Arena in Newcastle it was literally the last place I wanted to stay. Unfortunately I left it far too late when booking and all the hotels in Newcastle were booked up or else cost in the region of £200 a night while the Rooms Inn was available and a lot cheaper.

Deciding I had no choice I booked a room here as I thought to myself it was only for one night and most of that would be spent out of it.
When I arrived at the hotel however I was in for a pleasant surprise as the hotel had been refurbished since the last time that I stayed and it was much nicer than before and because it was so cheap it really is excellent value for money now.

The Rooms Inn is located outside of the centre of the city in a residential area but it isn’t difficult to find and is only about a 15minute walk to the bars and clubs of the centre. We came to Newcastle by train and it was only a 10 minute walk to the hotel from the train station and was pretty straight forward to find and only involved walking a straight line from the train station and there was no complicated diversions. I actually liked the location of the hotel as although it was far from the centre it wasn’t too off the beaten path and this meant that it was a lot cheaper than those that are right in the middle of the action.

If you are arriving by car the hotel offers free car parking facilities which is a bonus as finding free parking in Newcastle is a nightmare and the parking garages cost a fortune if you park there for more than a few hours.

The reception area was totally different from the last time I stayed and was nice and light and airy and it made such a difference on my impressions of the hotel coming into this nice new space. My friends that I was with had never stayed at the hotel before and they thought that it made a good first impression. The receptionist was nice and friendly and check in was easy and quick with all our details being ready for us checking in.

I had been telling my friends about my previous stay at the Rooms Inn and I was kind of hoping that I would get the same room so that they could see that I wasn’t exaggerating but I got a lovely refurbished room and this was worlds apart from the room that I remember. I just had a standard room and it wasn’t anything fancy but it was nice and more importantly it was clean. It also had absolutely everything that I could want from a hotel room for the night. The bed was nice and comfortable and there was the added bonus of a flat screen television and tea and coffee making facilities.

The en-suite was spotlessly clean and there was a bath as well as a shower above it. The shower had good pressure and there was plenty of hot water. Towels were plentiful and I honestly can’t find much to fault about the room or bathroom.

Although my friends had just booked the same as me they were upgraded to superior room as I assume all the other standards were already occupied. The superior room was lovely and you wouldn’t have been able to tell you were in budget hotel as they wouldn’t have looked out of place at a more expensive central hotel.

The only thing that I can complain about with the hotel was the noise at night. There seemed to be a lot of hen and stag parties staying at the hotel but as it was a Saturday night I kind of expected this as Newcastle is inundated with them on the weekends and although I was woken up a couple of times the noise wasn’t actually as bad as I imagined it might be.

We only paid £37 for our double room which I think is fantastic value for a weekend for two people. For this price I honestly can’t fault the hotel. If we had been paying upwards of £100 a night which is a more common price for a central hotel in Newcastle on a weekend then I might have expected a bit more but for this price the hotel offered everything plus a little bit more than it needed to and I would definitely think about staying here again for that amount.

I was in charge of booking the hotel for this part of the trip and after a look on the internet I chose the Novotel Airport hotel as it was the cheapest airport hotel available for that night.

When I originally booked the hotel I made the classic mistake of thinking that an airport hotel would actually be at the airport. Of course this turned out to be a rookie mistake and the Novotel Newcastle Airport Hotel is actually miles away from the airport. It always amazes me how hotels can get away with calling themselves airport hotels when they are in fact nowhere near the airport. As it was already booked there was nothing to be done except get a taxi as it isn’t really a walkable distance.
We got in a taxi and told the driver where we were going and then found out a little bit of good news. Apparently the hotel has an arrangement with the airport taxis whereby they pay for the taxis to the hotel. I had no clue about this and still can’t see anything on the website so they clearly do not advertise this very well but it was a really nice surprise and saved us the nearly £15 fare of the taxi. After finding that the hotel pay for your taxi it made me much less annoyed by the fact the hotel was located so far from the airport.
We arrived at the hotel at about 10:30 and check in was nice and quick. We asked about food and were told that we could either have a meal in the bar area or else have room service delivered to our room as long as we ordered before 11. We decided to get some room service as there was a private party being held in one of the hotels function rooms and there were quite a few drunk party guests wandering the hotel. The price for the room service was surprisingly reasonable actually and I think it was only something like £2 more to have the food delivered to the room which I thought was good for a hotel as I have paid a lot more than this before and only been able to order from a select menu whereas here we were able to order from the full bar menu.

As there were four of us I had booked us two twin rooms and the rooms were perfectly presentable and looked as though they had been recently refurbished. Instead of getting a room with a twin bed they appeared to have given us a family room as we had a double bed and the sofa bed had also been laid out and made up. I really wasn’t bothered about having to sleep on the sofa bed as it was large and comfortable and by the time we got to the hotel we just wanted to eat and then get a good nights sleep.
The room had everything that you would expect from a hotel of this type with a flat screen TV, desk, storage space, seating area etc. It was all spotlessly clean and nice and nicely heated and was neither too warm nor too cold. The bathroom was also nice and had a bath with a shower over it. The shower had a really good pressure to it and there were plenty of towels and both the bedroom and the bathroom were spotlessly clean.
One thing that I really liked about this room compared to other hotel rooms that I have stayed in was that it had an extra door between the room and the small hallway where the bathroom was. This meant that when this extra door was shut we had two doors between us and the hallway outside which really minimised the noise from the hallway and as there was a party going on downstairs and we had seen people from the party fetching things from their rooms on our floor we were worried that we were going to be getting woken up by them returning to their rooms drunk in the middle of the night. With the two doors closed we heard absolutely nothing from the hallway and managed to get a fantastic nights sleep.

The staff we encountered at the hotel were all really nice and friendly which was such a nice change after the staff at the hotel in Geneva. During check out they made sure to ask us if we enjoyed our stay and slept well and also gave us directions to the metro station which was located only a short walk from the hotel. As the rooms had already been paid for we just had to hand our keys in and the whole process was simple and straightforward.

I thought this hotel was a bargain. My room was £40 and as I was sharing with someone it ended up only costing me £20 for the night. Factor in the free taxi and I honestly can’t think of much bad to say about the hotel. Yes it is a little far from the airport but this really isn’t much of a problem since the hotel will pay for your taxi. The metro station is also only a short 10 minute walk away so if you are arriving without your own transport there are no problems. For those arriving with their own car the hotel does offer a park and fly scheme too.
Overall I think this hotel was well worth the money and it definitely somewhere I would consider staying again if flying from Newcastle Airport. The rooms were comfortable, the food was good and more importantly it just offered great value for money.

When going there my friends and I have in the past ordered a mini bus to take us home but I personally prefer to just book a hotel for the night and as Newcastle has a vast selection of hotels at reasonable prices finding a cheap room is never a problem.
