    Day Trips from Kaiserslautern

    Overview

    Quote:
Rhine River cruise in the summer when fireworks illuminate the castles on the banks.

    Quick Tips:

    Best Way To Get Around:

The best ways to get around are to rent a car (it is inexpensive to rent a mercedes or volvo, and so fun to drive) or to get a pass to take the trains. Train passes are not too expensive, but should be planned. There are different types of passes (youth, senior, and saver passes; if you buy more than one) and different areas for passes (one to six different countries). These passes can be bought for a certain period of time four days to months, and vary in price. Trains in Europe are easy to take and overall very safe.

    Cologne

    Attraction | "Cologne (Koln)"

    Quote:
Koln is the largest city on the Rhine. The main attraction is its world famous thirteenth century cathedral with its stained glass windows and the Shrine of the Magi (three kings). You can climb the 500 steps of the south tower and you will have an amazing view of the city and the Rhine River. Near the cathedral is the Roman-Germanic museum with an outstanding collection of Roman artifacts. There are many restaurants and shops along the Rhine. The locals are nice and most speak a little English. Best time to visit is spring/summer.

    Luxembourg City

    Attraction

    Quote:
Luxembourg is a small country nestled between France, Belgium, and Germany. It is called the "heart of Europe" by its locals and has this walled capital city. The most interesting sights are the Bockcasements, which are a network of tunnels and fortifcations under the city. Tours are available in English. The American Military Cemetery where Patton is buried is outside the city. Many places to eat and enjoy this cute city.

    Trier, Historic Roman City

    Attraction | "Trier"

    Quote:
This is one of my favorite places to visit in this area. The city was founded by the Romans in 15 BC and is the oldest town in Germany. The Porta Nigra, "Black Gate", is the dominate landmark of the city, dating back to the second century as the northern entrance to the city. For a small fee you can go into the Porta Nigra and see a great view of the city.

There are many markets in the city, especially during the holidays. There are also Roman baths, the oldest Christian church in Germany, and the Royal Imperial Palace to visit. Many places to eat and many hotels or cute B and Bs to stay at.

    Hohenecken

Attraction | "Hohenecken (castle and lake)"

    Quote:
The hike to the Castle is relatively short, but steep. The castle ruins date back to the thirteenth century and are not the most impressive, but it is a nice little hike for some fresh air. Two kilometers from the castle is Gelterswoog, where there are recreational activities - it's a great place for picnics and swimming. Small miniture golf area and volleyball nets are also there. There is a trail around the lake, mostly flat ground and enjoyable.

    Lusian Park

    Attraction

    Quote:
An inexpensive way to spend the day! From the park you can drive or take the bus into the city and see the fountain and the grounds around the Wassertum (water tower). The city has many places to shop, eat, and relax. This is a great place to visit if you have a few hours or the whole day.
