At first glance, the land appears to be a low grass savannah. However, once you get closer and see wet areas, you realize this is the natural attraction for animals. I was surprised to see water birds similar to those I encounter in South Florida, including white pelicans.
During our three game drives, I saw numerous elephants, zebras, giraffes, cape buffalos, hippopotami, hyenas, warthogs, wildebeest, cranes, Egyptian geese, gazelles, herons, African fish eagles, lions, and cheetahs. Since this was the first destination on my itinerary, I was quite pleased and a bit surprised by the sheer number of animals.
We stayed at the Oltukai Lodge. On the grounds, monkeys were always present and baboons regularly visited. From our room we could see elephants, zebras, and buffalo. All meals are buffet style, with many choices. The food was plentiful, but so-so. The food truly looked better than it tasted. I am certain everyone will find something that fits their tastes and diet. You must pay for drinks, including bottled water and soda, separately.
The lodge was also a bit greedy when it came to exchanging US dollars for Kenya schillings. Change your money or use the ATM in Nairobi. The lodges, most businesses, and even the people on the street are readily accept US dollars.
