Best Things Nearby:There are a number of things within 20 miles of the camp to do: Jimmie Rodgers Museum, dirt car racing in-season, Highland Park Dentzel Carousel, the bluegrass festival the fourth week of August, the Great Chunky River Raft Race on the first Saturday in June. Best Things About the Resort:The 550-foot water slide and large swimming pool. Plenty of room in it for everyone to enjoy. Has a nice, fenced play area. You've got to try the sausage-and-pancake breakfasts on weekends. In the evenings, they have ice cream socials, too.Resort Experience:Very rustic setting among the pines. The water mill was built on the site around 1790 by a Dr. Hunnelly. During the 19th century, many water mills operated in the hills and hollows of Kemper County, Miss. By the mid-1950s, only Sciple’s Mill was left. The mill was purchased by the Sciple family between 1830 and 1850. Since that time, there have been seven generations of Sciples working the mill. For all but three months between 1973 and 1974, after a tornado virtually destroyed the mill building on November 26, 1973, the mill was in continuous operation from the time it was built. After the tornado, the mill was rebuilt on the original floor and foundation using as much of the original lumber and materials as could be salvag...Read More

Nicknamed the Tenn-Tom Waterway, the river comprises 234 miles that include recreational, natural, and cultural resources. Few people crossing the bridge on I20-I59 in South-Central Alabama know about this river, which runs along the Alabama–Mississippi border. The scenic Tenn-Tom connects 16,000 miles of inland waterways to the Gulf of Mexico. Its 13,000 acres of prime land are used for recreational purposes. Our first journey to check out a portion of this natural beauty was a side trip off I20-I59 up Hwy 17 North to Aliceville, AL. The road is straight and wide. From Aliceville, we took Hwy 14 West to Pickensville. There we stopped at the Tom Bevill Visitor Center. This is not your ordin...Read More

Traveling south on I-59, we jumped off Exit 142 and found our way to Dunn’s Falls Water Park. History tells of a 34-year-old Irish immigrant named John Dunn who was looking for a home site that comes upon a unique setting along the Chunky River. It’s 1854, and as John looks around, he sees the perfect location to build a cotton mill and home. Along a shallow area of the river, the bluffs rose to treetop level, and a small stream following over the top of the bluffs would provide power before continuing down sixty to seventy feet to the river below. John, standing at the top of the bluffs looking out over the forest of the lower West Side, knew this was the location he’d looked for. It was the most ...Read More

Causeyville General Store

Story/Tip

Causeyville General Store Photo - Meridian, Mississippi
Quote:
If you enjoy going to yesteryear buildings that are still in use, you’ll want to stop by here. The general store and gristmill are on the National Register of Historic Places. The original store that sits next to the 1895 building was built in 1869 as a trading post for the settlers and Choctaw Indians. In the original building, the gristmill is still in operation, grinding corn into cornmeal. The mix for the cornmeal is an old variety of Indian white milling corn and popcorn. When the 1895 store was built, it also held the medical office of Dr. Billy Anderson, a country doctor. Not only did he have a medical practice, but he was also the first postmaster. Many of the origi...Read More
