I had one full day in London on the way back to the States from a trip in Nepal. I met my British girlfriend who did her darnest to show me the whole city in that day. After running from place to place she took me to The Cork & Bottle for lunch. I would have never found this place on my own as it is tucked away in an area off the main streets. What a pleasant surprise!
The Cork & Bottle is an underground wine bar with a top selection of wine, snacks, salads and dinner. We opted for the cheese board, picking four of the gormet cheeses available; brie, camembert le rustique, blue stilton and schlossberger. The cheese was served with crackers and Italian bread and we ordered a bottle of Boeckel Pinot Gris 2010 from their extensive wine list.
The Cork and Bottle was established in 1972 in the middle of Londons west end. The owner, Don Hewitson, has taken pride in creating not only a restaurant with character but with excellent food and a wine list that is well known. The service along with the ambiance of this small pub type restaurant is outstanding. Reservations are accepted and often recommended.
The Cork & Bottle is open from 11am-11.30pm Mon-Sat; noon-10.30pm Sun.
