We stayed there for three days in January and the fabulous hospitality and surroundings meant that I could have actually cried when I left.

The hotel is across the river from the main city of Luang Prabang and all of its stunning temples, but the location was one of the things we loved most about it. It sits on the side of the river which means it has spectacular views up and down the length of it. During the dry season (about October until May) there is a cute little bamboo bridge that crosses the river. it costs a couple of pennies to cross, which pays for the upkeep. During the rainy season you can get a little boat across the river or use the permanent bridge further down which is open to only pedestrians, bicycles and mopeds. It's about a ten minute walk from the hotel.

The hotel is also a ten minute taxi ride from the airport (which itself is tiny and very cute!) and you get transfers included in the price of your stay, which is a nice touch.

We stayed in a river view bungalow. It was a little bit more expensive than the other rooms in the main building, but it was so worth the extra. The room was stunning; full of wooden beams and floors and with a four poster bed (complete with mosquito net). The whole room was very authentic and basic, fitting the country and the surroundings, yet seemed to have a touch of luxury. The bathroom was gorgeous and really quite modern with a huge walk in shower. There were lots of little extras included in the room, including a selection of luxurious toiletries and free bottles of water that were replenished every day.

Breakfast was included in our room charge and was very pleasant. The restaurant is on the upper level and offers views over the resort and down to the river. The restaurant is open air which can be quite chilly in the mornings, but they solve this by putting little buckets of burning coals under the tables which is lovely. Breakfast itself is delicious and there's a good choice of cereals, cooked meats, cheeses, fruit, juices and a number of hot items that include national dishes which you should definitely try. They also cook eggs to order any way you like them and these come with bacon. The Lao coffee is amazing too.

The restaurant also has a lunch and dinner menu. We had lunch there one day and shared a chicken baguette and fries, which was more than enough for two of us and only cost about £5, possibly a little expensive comparatively for these parts, but well worth it in our opinion.

There are a few other facilities at the hotel including a swimming pool, which is deceptively big - it looks so much smaller than it is. There are a few sun loungers surrounding the pool. Not enough I imagine if everyone in the hotel wanted to use them, but we never had a problem getting one. They also have a couple of computers in the reception area that are free to use. There is wi-fi available for free throughout the hotel and we were surprised at how good it was considering that we were in a country not famed for its wi-fi connections. It wasn't the fastest ever and it did drop out occasionally but it was good enough. They also have a number of bicycles that you can hire for free. We did this a couple of times and found that it was a fantastic way of exploring the surrounding neighbourhoods - definitely do it!

The best thing about this hotel though by far was the staff. They were absolutely fantastic. They couldn't do enough for us and they seemed to be so happy and cheery all the time - and genuinely so at that. They all speak excellent English and are very knowledgeable about the local area so can advise you on what to do and see.

We paid about £40 per night for the hotel and it was so very worth it. I think the cheaper rooms in the main building are about £25 per night - both rates including breakfast and airport pick ups. I can't recommend the hotel enough and for that price, I think you'd be mad not to stay here. Close
