Philbrook Museum of Art

This is my favorite museum in Oklahoma. It is an italianate villa sitting on 23 of the most beautiful acres in the center of Tulsa. It was built in the 1920's by oilman Waite Phillips and has grown over the years to this peaceful and harmonic experience that satsifies the soul.

There is a large collection of art, including the masters, American Indian, Asian and a few others. I have enjoyed the travelling exhibits thoughtout the years, visiting to view the world of russian royalty and more of the masters such as Monet.

A great dining exerience awaits as you enjoy a gormet lunch overlooking the gardens. A friend and I ate there last summer. The summer green salad was to die for.

There has been a new addition to the gardens, a formal garden leading to the summerhouse. My first time to visit was this trip. I wish I had had a book to read, the numerous rose canopied benches were breathtaking and inviting.

You will pay $7.50 for adults and an extra $3.00 for the audio guide for the museum and gardens. Please take this offer, the audio guide is a great tool. Children under 18 are free, making this a great day for the family.
The website for the museum is well built and very informative, www.philbrook.org

This Beaux-Arts Italianate villa, formerly home to oilman Waite Phillips, houses a wonderful permanent collection of American, African, American Indian, Asian and European art. Among the three floors to the house, you will find paintings, sculptures and artifacts. The artwork is accented by the wonderful architecture in the home.

There was a nice Wedgewood collection and a room housing photos and drawings of the history of the home while it was occupied. They had a small room of more contemporary art.

They were in between special exhibits when I attended, but after reading about some Western artists I had seen elsewhere, many of them have been featured here.

Outside of the home are spectacular gardens. They include a pretty Rock Garden and Water Garden. The gardens can be viewed without paying admission to the museum, and they are worth a visit on their own. Additionally, the museum is located in a residential area and is surrounded by many large, beautiful homes worth seeing.

They do have a restaurant, offer tours, and have a nice museum shop.

Philbrook is an art museum housed in the mansion of the Phillips family (they started phillips 66). The first thing that amazed me was that someone actually lived in such a huge house. One simply walks around the rooms of the house and enjoys the artwork. Looking out the back windows into the gardens you feel as though you have been transported to an Italian villa. There are multiple types of artwork, from Rennaisance European artists, to Japanese artwork, modern pieces, there is even a history section with selections from ancient Egypt. Typically Philbrook will also house a temporary exhibit of some kind. If you come during the spring or summer make sure you give yourself time for the gardens, and even think about a nice romantic picnic on the grounds.
